I was asked to participate in a research study. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the effects of radiation therapy on my tumor and my quality of life. Currently, over 10,000 patients are enrolled in this University of Florida study. In addition, worldwide, it is estimated that by the end of 2019, there was a total of 200,000 patients that had been treated by proton therapy.
Proton therapy is not a new medical technology. Since 1954 with the first use of proton therapy, this technology has evolved and improved like most other forms of technology. The newest form of proton beam therapy is called pencil beam scanning. The University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute uses pencil beam scanning.
Doctors Nancy and William Mendenhall are two of the authors of this study.
I agreed to participate.
